Pradhan rout issue is closed chapter, hammers in Pichad

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, JULY 2: The defeat of RD Pradhan, official Congress nominee, in the recent biennial Rajya Sabha polls from Maharashtra was ``a closed chapter'' now, Leader of Opposition in State Assembly Madhukar Pichad today said.

``The issue is over'', Pichad, who came from Delhi last night after meeting Congress president Sonia Gandhi, told media persons at his residence here.

Queried on media reports about strict action against `erring' MLAs, he countered, ``What action? From where will we get concrete proof establishing that legislators had cross-voted?''. He, however added that he had left it to the party president, and senior party leader Sharad Pawar to decide on the issue.

``I said nothing that could constitute a misunderstanding vis-a-vis other leaders,'' he said.

Although every party was affected by the cross-voting, it was only Congress that instituted a committee to look into the matter, he said and dared the Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena to institute such an inquiry into the cross-votingby respective party MLAs.

``To have discipline in democracy I welcome such a move'', he said adding, saving democracy from the onslaught of money power was his party's endeavour.

Asked about the committee's report and names of the `defaulting' party MLAs, Pichad said, ``It is a confidential document''.

Pichad also warned that nothing more than what he had said about his counterpart in the Legislative Council, Chhagan Bhujbal, should be attributed to him. ``I have received umpteen calls throughout the day from the media seeking the whereabouts of Chhagan Bhujbal. All that I said is that he is still in London undergoing treatment for his damaged vocal chords. Nothing should be construed out of this limited statement so as to create a misunderstanding between me and Bhujbal,'' he added.

Meanwhile, MPCC chief Ranjit Deshmukh, who called on Sonia Gandhi Wednesday, told her that the cross voting Congress MLAs was not intentional and happened due to the ``game of money''.

``Let us see what happens, I amnot sure'', he said when asked if disciplinary action would be taken soon and what would be its nature.
