Old couple attacked

An unidentified man attacked an old couple and their servant at Krishna Nivas, Linking Road, Khar this afternoon. Police are surprised because the attacker did not seem to have any particular motive and just walked off after injuring the three.

Seventy-year-old Suryakant Mehta answered his door bell around 2.30 pm and was horrified to see a man with a chopper in his hand standing at the door. The intruder, without uttering a word, began stabbing Mehta and the old man collapsed on the floor screaming for help.

When his wife, 65-year-old, Kusum Mehta and servant came out of the kitchen alarmed by his screams, they too were attacked by the stranger. Kusum sustained three deep gashes in her abdomen. The attacker then walked off leaving the three lying in a pool of blood. They were later rushed to the Bhabha Hospital at Bandra by the neighbours. While Kusum and the servant were reported to be out of danger, doctors said Mehta was critical.

The Khar police have lodged a case ofattempt to murder. ``The assailant did not take away any valuables. It's a very, very strange case,'' a senior officer stated. The Mehtas in their statement to the police said they had no enemies.
