Spurned lover gulps down pesticide, mercury

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, July 2: Ashok Samson, 22, bought bridal wear and jewellery for the girl he loved, before going to her house in Adarsh Nagar last evening. But when the girl's mother refused to let him marry her daughter, Ashok gulped down some pesticide and mercury from clinical thermometers.

He was taken to the Hindu Rao Hospital in a critical condition. The police said that Ashok went to the house of R.N. Jindal around 6.30 p.m. yesterday.Jindal was not home at the time. The only other occupants were his wife Anita and daughter Preeti. When Anita Jindal opened the door she found Ashok standing outside with a plastic plate in his hand. Anita told the police that she had never seen or met Ashok before yesterday. Even as she was about to ask him about his identity, Samson said that he loved Preeti and wanted to meet her. He also said that he wanted to marry Preeti and had brought her some jewellery and bridal wear.

An infuriated Anita told Ashok to go away. But he started shouting for Preeti. When she did not respond, he took out a bottle of insecticide and gulped down its contents. He also took out some thermometers from his pocket, broke open the ends and swallowed the mercury.

R.N. Jindal rushed back home after he was informed about the incident. Ashok was already unconscious and was taken to the hospital. A case of attempt to suicide has been registered. The police have also accepted a complaint of harassment filed by Anita Jindal against Ashok.
