Pain's a pleasure if you get your nerves doctored

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
HYDERABAD, July 3: It is now possible to convert pain into a pleasurable experience. A team of doctors from India and Australia recently did this by implanting a new spinal stimulator that `told' the brain that the pain emanating from a patient's back was an enjoyable experience. Presenting their results yesterday, Rajsunder Raj of Australia said that the sensation of pain from the lower limbs is carried to the brain through a series of electrical impulses by the nerves.

The implant intervenes ``short circuiting'' these impulses. Finally, the brain `reads' the new `tingling' message as one that is good and body-friendly. The procedure involves passing an electrode to sites of the spinal cord suspected to be the nerve centres of the pain impulse.
