Aniket canters past Rahul

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, July 3: Might will win over size any time. And so will a cool head over nerves. This was more than evident in the cadet boys and girls matches of the Amit Khishti Memorial Table Tennis tournament which commenced at the newly built basement hall of Sharda Centre here today.

Nowhere was this more obvious than in the second round clash between second seeded Aniket Koparkar and Rahul Paranjape in the cadet boys category, as the pint sized Aniket demolished his opponent almost effortlessly at 21-10, 21-18.

The clash was full of speedy stroke-play, as Aniket moved aggressively and confidently to play an attacking game, taking a first game lead. Rahul rallied back in the second game, and for some time it looked as if the match would stretch into the third game, but despite Rahul's excellent comeback, Aniket never lost his cool and took the game, and the match, with a three point lead.

The clash between top seed Adwait Vaidya and Sagar Kelkar, in the same section, progressed along almost identical lines, the only difference being that extra points had to be played. Sagar surrendered meekly in the first game but stretched Vaidya to three extra points before giving up the fight at (24-22).

Only the match between Sourabh Paranjape and Srivastava Wagle stretched to three games in this category, as Sourabh beat Srivastava 19-21, 21-13, 21-19.

The first upset of the tournament took place in the cadet girls category as fourth seeded Priyanka Joshi went down 21-19, 17-21, 21-13 to Vedawati Patwardhan.

The other three-game clash in this section was between Ruhi Sidhaye and Aditi Thatte, which was won by the former at 19-21, 21-19, 21-17.
