S Railway retain title

Julian Rodrigo
CHENNAI, July 3: Southern Railway Sports Association, backed by a splendid performance from the indomitable P T Usha (three gold medals), retained the overall title with 176.5 points on the final day of the Indian Oil-Servo Federation Cup Athletics at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Friday.

Eastern Railway (100 points) and Tamil Nadu (85) finished second and third respectively.

AAFI's idea to field a National select team in the relay events paid off. The scratch combination of Jata Shankar, Ramachandran, Lijo David and Paramjit Singh with a timing of 3:06.66 set a National record and a new Meet record in the men 4 x 400 m relay. The quartet thereby also attained the qualifying norm of 3:07.00 for the Asian Track and Field Meet at Japan. The previous National timing was 3:07.22 set way back in '89.

The women's 4 x 100 relay scratch combination squad of Saraswathi Dev, Rachita Mistry, E B Shyla and P T Usha also qualified. When P T Usha, who ran the anchor leg, just clipped away and finished a clear 75 metres ahead of the second placed Railways, it looked like the National record was in for a pounding. But they missed the mark by a whisker and could only equal the record of 44.81. Interestingly it was the same squad with only Saramma in Saraswathi Dev's place then. The old record was set in 1994 Hiroshima Games.

The only other qualifier was Jyotirmoyee Sikdar of Eastern Railway in the 800m.
