Gujarat Govt, Reliance issued court notice on cyclone deaths
The Gujarat government and Reliance Petroleum Limited were issued notices by the Gujarat high court yesterday. Acting chief justice K G Balkrishnan and Justice J M Panchal issued the notice after a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by Jansangarsh Manch seeking constitution of a high-level committee to inquire into the deaths of migrant labourers working with Reliance Industry Limited (RIL) refinery during the recent cyclone in Gujarat.

Bihar defies NHRC on relief to police victim
The National Human Rights Commission is caught in a tussle with the Bihar government, which appears reluctant to pay the Rs 10-lakh compensation the Commission recommended for the family of a businessman shot dead in a fake police encounter. It is a test of sorts for the NHRC which often recommends compensation to be paid by state governments for the families of police atrocity victims.

Kidney recipient lives, donor dies
Prabhakar Ramrao Naik may not have had to hawk paan at the street corner for the rest of his life had he not died from brain haemorrhage this evening. His kidney would have taken care of that. But the very organ which sold him a second chance at a better life was also the vehicle of his death.
