Russia, China concerned at tension in S Asia
Nuclear neighbours Russia and China said yesterday they were both concerned about threats to security in Southern Asia after recent nuclear tests by India and Pakistan. Russian Foreign Minister Yevgeny Primakov and Chinese President Jiang Zemin met at a regional security summit in Kazakhstan's commercial capital Almaty, also attended by the former Soviet states of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

HK can pull Asia out of trouble: Clinton
One year after China took command of Hong Kong, US President Bill Clinton spoke up for freedom and human rights yesterday and said ``this once-booming port city can help lead Asia out of turbulent times'' in financial markets. On the final day of his nine-day journey, Clinton addressed community and business leaders on the theme of building stability in Asia for the 21st century.

Israelis, Palestinians remove barricades; tension defused
Israel removed barricades from a coastal road in the Gaza strip at dawn on Friday, while the Palestinians shifted the three road blocks they had set up in retaliation. The move defused tension in the area which had seen Palestinian police in firing position squaring off against Israeli soldiers late on Thursday in the southern Gaza Strip.
