Annan won't be present when PM meets Sharif
A Foreign office spokesman on Saturday said there was no information here that United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan would be present in Sri Lanka when the Indian and Pakistani prime ministers hold a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the upcoming SAARC summit. The summit is scheduled from July 29 to 31, and Atal Behari Vajpayee and Nawaz Sharif are expected to hold bilateral talks on its sidelines.

CIA zeroes in on early warning system
In a classified report on how to prevent future miscalculations in the wake of Indian nuclear tests, the American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has reportedly zeroed in on an early warning system, starting with an obscure post in charge of contrarian thinking. The report by retired Admiral David Jeremiah, former vice-chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, says the intelligence services need to find new ways to issue warning by making sure that contrarian views are heard.

China upbeat on ties with US
China yesterday expressed optimism about the outcome of Bill Clinton's nine-day visit and described the improvement in Sino-US ties as confirming to the trend of the times that cannot be hampered by any force. The Beijing summit between the Chinese president Jiang Zemin and his US counterpart on June 27 was "positive, constructive and fruitful" according to People's Daily, the ruling communist party's mouthpiece.
