Private role likely in housing sector

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
COIMBATORE, July 5: The Union urban development ministry is working out modalities to involve private builders, including NRIs, in the construction of houses for poor and low income group people. Stating this here, Union urban development minister Ram Jethmalani said housing was being given the same importance as infrastructure in order to meet the growing demand for dwelling units.

He told reporters that under the proposed scheme, land would be made available to the builders by the government and they had to provide built houses. The ministry would also extend five-year tax holiday to those taking part in the projects and make legal changes if necessary, he added.
