Thakre against Art 356
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
LUCKNOW, July 5: Bharatiya Janata Party national president Kushabhau Thakre today said that his party was against the misuse of Article 356. Thakre also told reporters here that though the law and order situation in Bihar, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal was ``grave'', these Governments could not be sacked merely on that ground. ``The party does not have a majority in the Rajya Sabha where this step has to be approved and it can also be challenged in court,'' he said. When asked to comment on the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh, he admitted that it was bad but said it had been worse under the previous governments. In fact, the Kalyan Singh Government had inherited this and many other problems, the BJP leader claimed. Among other things, Thakre added, the State coffers had been empty, and the Government had taken praiseworthy steps. The Government at the Centre had also inherited problems, according to Thakre. But the BJP president asserted that this was no handicap and these could be solved in time.Governments do not have a magic wand with which to do everything at the same time, he said. To prevent frequent elections, he added, his party had opted for the coalition concept but a coalition Government should not function as if it were a single party in power. The allies have to be taken along and their aspirations catered to. On the same note, he said the Vajpayee Government would continue with the support of its coalition partners including Jayalalita.
