BPEU not to take part in strike
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, July 5: The Bharatiya Postal Employees Union and the Railway Mail Service Union will not join the proposed indefinite country-wide strike called by postal employees from July 8. The decision was taken after union representatives were assured by Union Information and Broadcasting Minister that their demands would be considered. Office-bearers of the Gujarat circle of the BPEU, in a release issued here, said that the unions had received orders from the national office-bearers not to participate in the strike. The union held talks with the minister over the weekend.Circle secretary Irshad Shaikh alleged that the strike was ``politically motivated.'' He said the unions had threatened the strike, before the government could consider their demands. Stating instances in the past where the two unions had supported a strike for their various demands, union office-bearers claimed that many of their demands had been pending for the past 50 years. Representatives said they would meet the chief labour commissioner on July 17 to discuss their demands. The union would, however, keep the strike option open if talks failed at a later stage, Shaikh said.
