HC extends stay on demolition

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, July 8: Gujarat High Court has further extend interim relief to Bhagal Minar Trust till August 3. Now the Surat Municipal Corporation cannot pull down the part of Minar Masjid at Bhagal Char Rasta.

Earlier, the court had given SMC the go-ahead to demolish the part provided they did not touch the place of worship. The Court had given six weeks to the aggrieved party - Minara Masjid Trust - to move the Apex Court.

About two years ago, the then municipal commissioner S Rao's move to demolish the minar was resisted by the minority community and the trust had obtained stay from the High Court. Then the court had directed the SMC not to demolish the minar, which is impending road alignment and has been a contentious issue. Last month when the stay lapsed, former mayor and leader of house in SMC Fakirbhai Chauhan lost no opportunity to challenge municipal commissioner S Jagadeesan to pull down the minar.

Initially, Jagadeesan hesitated, saying that it a sensitive issue. But the pressure mounted on him. For the last few days he had adopt aggressive posture. ``I have to implement the court order. If they (the trust) do not pull down the minar on their own I will'', Jagadeesan had told reporters.

Civic sources say his stand has nothing to do with his intention. In the heart of his heart, he never wanted to be instrumental in causing tension. With the interim relief extended, he has got the much-needed respite.
