Bhutia seeks revamping of Indian football

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CALCUTTA, July 9: India's ace football striker Bhaichung Bhutia appears a little disillusioned with the way football is being conducted in the country. ``Everybody wants to know why we are not in the World Cup but no one wants to look into the problems.''

Bhutia said that a complete revamping was required. Speaking at a talk show, he opined that the World Cup was no time to experiment with rules like the tackle-from-behind.

Bhutia opined that had the rule been introduced by FIFA a year earlier, there would not have been so many red cards in the tournament. ``That would have given the players as well as the referees enough time to get used to the rule.''

Speaking on various aspects of the game, Bhutia said he was not very impressed by Brazil's game so far, but has found Ronaldo's performance quite creditable. ``He (Ronaldo) is being marked very tightly and yet has been creating spaces.'' Bhutia feels that the Brazilian striker will come good in the final against France. ``At times, there have been three rival defenders guarding him, which has made things very difficult for him,'' Bhutia defended the Brazilian who has fallen short of pre-tournament speculations that he might well the player to watch out for.

Regarding Brazil, Bhutia feels that the champions' awesome reputation gave them a psychological advantage. After watching the matches, the Indian striker thought that a few teams were overawed by Brazil. According to him, the main teams have been France, The Netherlands and Croatia. Of course, Croatia, in their first World Cup, had nothing to lose and played their hearts out. France and Holland displayed excellent defending. Bhutia is particularly impressed by Frenchman Marcel Deseilly and Dutch defender Japp Stam.
