New Shatabdi is platform for ATMs, clean tracks

Saurabh Shukla
NEW DELHI, July 12: The New Delhi Railway Station is getting a facelift in preparation for the much talked about Shatabdi Plus. Christened the Swarna-Jayanti Shatabdi Express, it is to be flagged off by the Prime Minister on August 15.

A premium lounge, ATM machines, vending machines for beverages and automatic dispensing machines for soft drink cans and chocolates, a Wimpy's counter are some of the facilities being introduced on the brand new Platform No. 12.

According to officials, tenders for car-rental services have been floated and a booth is being set up. Passengers can make use of their cellphones on board with the help of a roaming card which will be available at the platform.

``Keeping the track clean was one of our biggest problems. We have introduced high-pressure jet pipelines which will spray water and keep the tracks clean,'' said a senior railway official.

Recent visitors to the station who have noticed the new info-signboards would be interested to know that the National Institute of Design had a hand in the design.

Moreover, Ajmeri Gate is being developed as a special terminal so that passengers can approach the platform directly. The coaches of the train, scheduled to ply between New Delhi to Amritsar, are expected to reach here by July 31.

Cooking will be banned on all platforms of the station. Vendors will be supplied food packets under the brandname `Rail Aahar' prepared by the base kitchen of the Railways.

Besides this even the food trollies and soft drink counter will be specially designed by the sponsors free of cost. ``We haven't utilised the enormous potential that was here. We will generate revenue to the tune of Rs 2.89 crore, which has risen from a measely Rs 25 lakh we were getting earlier,'' the official added.

Officials are upbeat about the project and expect to conduct a dry run of the train in the first week of August.
