Well within its rights
There has been criticism about the relevance and validity of the official teams recently deputed by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to Tamil Nadu, Bihar and West Bengal to assess their law and order situation. It is argued that these forays were politically motivated; that the teams could have been deputed, if at all, only after consulting with concerned states; that it is the Governors' job to report failure of the constitutional machinery.

Law unto itself
The observations by Home Minister L.K. Advani on the state of the judicial system do not come a day too soon. Not only has it ceased to deliver justice, it has become a tool, however unwilling, in the hands of people who specialise in manipulating its levers.

Jain for himself
Justice M.C. Jain has devoted a considerable part of his final report for arguing his own case. Troubled and tired by the avalanche of ridicule that he faced in the press and public after the interim report, Justice Jain has asked for an amendment in the 1952 Commissions of Inquiry Act.
