Hashimoto quits over LDP rout
Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto resigned yesterday after his ruling Liberal Democratic Party's stunning defeat in elections dominated by voter anger over his failure to pull Japan out of its worst recession in decades. Hashimoto conceded defeat and said he took responsibility for the party's winning just 44 seats out of the 126 contested half of parliament's upper house in yesterday's elections.

Charles right to let William meet Camilla, says survey
Prince Charles's efforts to win more public acceptance for his mistress Camilla Parker Bowles seem to be bearing fruit, according to a Sunday newspaper poll which welcomed her recent meeting with his son William. However, the survey published in Britain's Mail on Sunday showed that public opinion remains firmly against Parker Bowles ever marrying the heir to the British throne and reigning as queen.

Mass grave of Tamilians in Jaffna alleged
Is there a Bosnia lurking under the red soils of Jaffna? Is there a mass grave of Tamil civilians in Chemmanai in the northern peninsula of Sri Lanka? This disturbing question was raised last week after a court passed death sentences on five soldiers and a reserve police constable, convicting them of the rape and murder of a teenager, Krishanthy Kumaraswami, and the murders of her mother, brother and another relative who were inquiring about her.
