Headhunter Zidane leads slaughter
Hosts France won the World Cup for the first time after beating four-time champions Brazil 3-0 on a night of drama and wild celebration. Brazil's worst Cup defeat started with a mysterious injury scare surrounding Ronaldo and was detonated by two superbly-headed goals from midfielder Zinedine Zidane in the first half.

Paes picks up first ATP singles crown
India number one Leander Paes won his first ATP singles title beating Neville Godwin of South Africa 6-3, 6-2 to claim the Hall of Fame tennis championships in Newport yesterday. Paes, in control most of the way, needed only 72 minutes to beat Godwin and become the first Indian to win the tournament since Vijay Amritraj in 1984.

Golden boot for Suker
Croatian striker Davor Suker won the Golden Boot award as top scorer of the World Cup with six goals. His strike in Croatia's 2-1 win over the Netherlands in Saturday's third place play-off took him one clear of Gabriel Batistuta of Argentina and Christian Vieri of Italy, each on five.
