"Infidelity" led cop to kill wife, son and commit suicide

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NASHIK, July 17: Suspicion over fidelity of his second wife drove police constable Kantaram Pepatrao Wadekar to shoot her and their eight-month-old son at a pointblank range before blowing his head off with his service rifle, according to preliminary investigations.

Wadekar (buckle no. 514), Ambad police station, had been assigned night patrolling duty. On Wednesday night, he reported for duty, collected his service rifle and ten rounds and went around his beat. Next morning, his parents, who visited his newly bought flat at Nayan Sagar Society, Shivtirth Colony, CIDCO, found that there was no response to the doorbell. The police were called and one of them climbed a pipe and peeped in from a window to discover that Wadekar, his wife, Sunita and son Makarand were lying in pools of blood.

The door was pulled down by the police, who recovered three empty cartridges from the room, Wadekar had apparently shot his son and wife pointblank, before shooting himself in the head. He had carried his service rifle tohis house, without depositing it at the police station after completion of his duty at 5 pm.

Wadekar had joined the police force in 1986 and had been posted at Ambad police station two years ago. He married Seema Kusumade on June 9, 1990. They had an 8-yr-old son. However, he could not get along well with her and in 1996 they divorced. Their son, Sonu, is with Wadekar's elder brother, Mohan, who works with the telecom department.

On February 11, 1997, Wadekar married Sunita, and about eight months ago, she bore him a son. However, he suspected her fidelity and did not visit her for the past eight months, when she was with her parents for her delivery. Annoyed by his gesture, Sunita and her parents had complained to the Mahila Hakk Saurakshan Samiti, Nashik. The Samiti had brought about a patchup between the two on July 14, when the couple started living together again at their new flat bought about four months ago.

Investigating officials said that Wadekar used to suspect the fidelity of his wife.Probably he suspected that somebody else had fathered the child. The residents of his building did not hear any gunshots, as a borewell was being drilled throughout the night in the neighbourhood.
