HYDERABAD, July 17: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu declared today that his government would bring in a separate legislation ``if necessary'' to protect the properties of churches and Christian religious institutions in the state.Intervening during question hour in the Legislative Assembly, he asked the Opposition to give suggestions in this regard. Sharing members' concern over growing disputes over church properties, he said that the government would deal with the issue after studying it in detail.
He was responding to a question from D L Ravindra Reddy (Congress) and others who expressed concern over the increasing attacks on the clergy in property disputes.
Ravindra Reddy alleged that recently two church priests were murdered at Nalgonda and Vijayawada due to estate antagonism. He urged the government to bring in a comprehensive legislation to protect the properties of churches in the state.
Earlier, referring to the dispute at Nalgonda, Municipal Administration Minister Bandaru SatyanarayanaMurthy told the House that a proposal for change of land use in regard to the Baptist Church there was pending before the municipal commissioner.
While making it clear that any decision on the issue would be taken only after the revenue department resolved the ownership of land, the minister denied the charge that the Nalgonda municipality sanctioned a layout against the master plan on the disputed land.
