Avinash Kriplani sinks four-year record

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, July 17: Avinash Kriplani, Bhavana Sharma and Parikshit Shetty turned in with fine display on the second day of the Suman Hotels sponsored Greater Mumbai Amateur Aquatics Association Age-group and Open Swimming Championships at the Andheri Sports Complex swimming pool today.

A slight temperature did not hinder Kriplani who set the pool ablaze with two record breaking performances. The young lad from Khar Gymkhana erased a four-year record in the 100 metre freestyle boys Group III while clocking one minute 1.62 seconds. The previous mark stood in the name of club-mate Aniruddha Dutt (1.02.96).

Kriplani then returned with another impressive performance to rewrite the 50m backstroke mark in the same category timing 33.34 seconds. Jai Shah of Juhu Vile Parle (JVP) was the earlier record-holder (34.21) set last year. Interestingly, of the five records sunk today, four came in the 50-metre events which were introduced last year.

In a rerun of yesterday's feat, Bhavana Sharma of BPCL continued with hersuperlative performances breaking two more records today in the girls Group III category. Bhavana demolished the field in the 50m breaststroke with a time of 38.74 seconds to improve upon Tejaswi Shetty's (JVP) mark of 39.52.

Bhavana later asserted her supremacy in the 50m backstroke with a time of 34.97 seconds sinking the 37.28 record of Rashi Oberoi.

Upcoming Parikshit Shetty of Otters Club also clocked a record time of 36.68 seconds to win the boys 50m breast stroke. He improved upon Riad Palia's (Otters Club) mark by 00.75 secs.

Among the other notable performers today were Sindoor Thakkar, Siddhant Nagrani, Riyad Palia (all Otters), Tejas Pathare (MGMO) and Anshuka Parwani (KG).
