The Mahatma lives on
Much of what Mahatma Gandhi said and did was contested in his own lifetime and the arguments continue. But such was the essence of his life and works that he is regarded in India and the world as one of this century's greatest leaders. No one and nothing in India can match the power of Gandhiji's name to summon up courage and a sense of humanity.

Toughness and tact
The nation has heaved a sigh of relief over the postal employees calling off their indefinite strike. The week-long strike had caused immense hardship to the people, a majority of whom do not have access to more sophisticated means of communication than that provided by the Postal Department. What is noteworthy about the resolution of the dispute is the "mutual trust and understanding" the two sides showed in their final negotiations.

Thin skin and thick heads
Going by published reports, in its current nuclear negotiations with America India is seeking "concessions from the West on the transfer of dual-use technology in exchange for a positive commitment to CTBT," and "facility-specific" rather than full-scope safeguards on the nuclear power plants and other nuclear facilities that India may buy.
