Pakistan hikes petrol price

ISLAMABAD, July 18: Pakistan today announced a steep 25 per cent hike in the price of petrol to meet the growing budgetary shortfall following the economic squeeze due to international sanctions in the aftermath of its nuclear tests.

A marathon cabinet meeting approved the hike aimed at generating additional revenue worth Rs 10 billion after a detailed discussion on a comprehensive package to meet the impact of the sanctions, deputy chairman of Planning Commission Hafiz Pasha said.

Pasha, who was designated by the cabinet to communicate with the media, said after a detailed study of the economic scenario in the post sanctions period it was found that there was a shortfall of Rs 20 billion.
