MUMBAI: Mumbai-based Nandini Kulkarni and Mangala Saraf had a highly satisfactory outing in the World Veterans table tennis tournament at Manchester last month by helping India finish runners-up in the women's team championship besides ending up as losing finalists in the doubles event too in the 40-50 age group.

Nandini and Mangala lost in the team championship final 1-3 to an Estonian pair after beating the Netherlands 3-0 and Australia 3-1 in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, according to information available here.

Paes doubtful

MUMBAI: The All-India Tennis Association (AITA) was yet to receive a letter from India No 1 Leander Paes about his availability for the first round of the World Group Davis Cup qualifying tie against Great Britain to be held in England from September 25-27.

AITA secretary general, Ramesh Desai, said here today that the Davis Cup team would be selected in New Delhi in the first week of September.

Aparnafancied

BANGALORE: Aparna Popat, fresh from her triumph at the just-concluded Asian Satellite badminton championships at Chennai will be aiming for a third successive title when she takes on the opposition in the fourth BPL All-India Open tournament which begins at the Karnataka Badminton Association, here on Sunday.
