Rally around -- Swamy to Jaya, Sonia

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, July 18: Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy today urged Congress president Sonia Gandhi and AIADMK chief J Jayalalitha to join hands immediately so as to prevent "representatives of RSS fascists" from hoisting the tricolour at Red Fort on independence day.

Swamy referred to the rise in prices, "complete mismanagement" of international relations and VHP statements on Ayodhya. "I hope that the eyes of the Congress leaders have opened to this deteriorating reality caused by the BJP-led government and the sinister fascism of the RSS."

"It is imperative in the national interest that Sonia Gandhi and Jayalalitha come together soon on a common platform," he said.

He reiterated his demand for immediate resignation of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi charging him with having betrayed the interests of the state on the Cauvery issue.

Earlier, he also asked Jayalalitha to "unilaterally withdraw" the AIADMK Front's support to the BJP-led coalition government at the Centre, if the Vajpayeegovernment sought an adjournment on the resumed hearing on the Cauvery waters issue on July 21 in the SC. The AIADMK front should not bother about the non-existence of an alternative. "Anything is better than a government which betrays us on vital Tamil people's interests," he said. He also demanded the resignation of Karunanidhi for "betraying" the state's interests by "deliberate non-action" on the Cauvery water dispute with Karnataka and the dispute with Kerala on raising the height of the Mullaiperiyar dam.

Though the SC had, in April last, directed the Centre to prepare within eight weeks, a scheme to implement the interim order of the Cauvery water tribunal and report to it, no action had been taken.

Similarly, in the Mullaiperiyar dam issue, though the central water commission had said in June, 1996 that the dam be repaired to raise the water level to 152 ft from the present 136 ft, Karunanidhi and TMC leader G K Moopanar had "deliberately slept over it", he alleged.
