Bhavana, Sindoor dazzle

July 19: Records continued to tumble on the fourth and final day of the Greater Mumbai Amateur Aquatics Association's Age Group and Open swimming Championships sponsored by Suman Hotels at the Andheri Sports Complex on Sunday. An interesting thing was, of the six records broken today five were re-written by girls.

Setting the ball on roll was Sindoor Thakkar of Otters Club. The 15-year-old student of Jasudben ML clocked a record 29.75 seconds in the girls Group II 50 metres freestyle. In doing so she bettered the earlier record of 29.83 seconds which also stood in her name.

At the time of going to press, Sindoor had already won 17 gold at this meet and showed earnest of winning more. ``I want to give my best,'' said Sindoor.

Rashi Oberoi and Radhika Lakhani finished second and third respectively.

BPCL's young prodigy, Bhavna Sharma continued to add to her tally of records. The class eighth student of Swami Vivekanand School set a new meet record in the girls Group III 100m back stroke. Bhavna clocked1 minute 16.72 seconds erasing the earlier mark of 1:18.18 seconds in the name of Delna Bhumgara.

Bhavna was followed by Minita Shah of MGMO and Gayatri Dhumatkar (Khar Gymkhana).

Khar Gymkhana's Avinash Kriplani overcame a spirited challenge by Parikshit Shetty of Otters Club to win the 100m backstroke in a record time of 1 minute 11.72 seconds. Shetty finished with a time of 1:12.47, also bettering the meet reord of 1:12.60 set by Romir Bannerjee. Rehan Poncha (Otters Club) finished third.

In another keen tussle Shreya Nadkarni of BPCL set a new mark to win the girls Group VI 25m butterfly stroke. Shreya clocked 20.30 seconds, eating more than two seconds of the earlier time of 22.65 by Shruti Reddy (IIT).

Mehaik Shaikh (STC) also bettered the meet time, finishing with a time of 22.55 seconds. Radha Kapadia (YMCA) had to settle for third place.

MGMO's Katie Hakim also set a new meet record in the 50m butterfly for Group IV girls. Gayatri Dumatkar's three-year-old record of 35.23 sunk as Katieclocked 34.58 seconds. Alefiyah Bharmal (YMCA) came second while Anshuka Parwani (KG) finished third.

Pratiksha Ahuja clocked 46.45 seconds to erase Gayatri Dhumatkar's record of 46.75 seconds in the girls Group V 50m breaststroke. Aditi Pitre and Shivangi Lolayekar finished second and third respectively.

Gr V 50m breaststroke: Pratiksha Ahuja (46.45) NMR, Aditi Pitre (50.97), Shivangi Lolayekar

Gr VI 25m butterfly: Shreya Nadkarni (BPCL 20.30) NMR, Mehaik Shaikh (STC 22.55), Radha Kapadia (YMCA)
