INDIANAPOLIS, July 19: Jim Courier replaced an injured Richey Reneberg and teamed with Todd Martin to beat a Belgian team as the United States advanced to the Davis Cup semifinals.Courier and Martin, who had played only two matches together, defeated Belgium's Xavier Malisse and Johan van Herck 5-7, 6-2, 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.
The victory gave the United States a 3-0 advantage in the best-of-five quarter-final. The US will now play Italy in the semifinals on Sept 25-27. The matches will be played in the United States at a site to be determined.
Both teams changed doubles teams one hour before the match.
Courier, who helped the United States sweep the opening singles, made his Davis Cup doubles debut after doctors determined Reneberg sustained a partial tear in his left knee during practice here. Belgium changed its previously announced lineup with van Herck replacing Filip Dewulf.
Sweden through
HAMBURG: Jonas Bjorkman defeated Nicolas Kiefer 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 today to giveSweden victory over Germany and a berth in the Davis Cup semifinals.
Bjorkman's win gave Sweden an insurmountable 3-1 advantage following victory in yesterday's doubles and a split of Friday's opening singles.
Thomas Enqvist and Thomas Haas were playing the remaining return singles later today in a match with no more than statistical value. Spain reignLA CORUNA (SPAIN): World No 4 Carlos Moya won Spain a place in the Davis Cup semifinals for the first time in 11 years by downing Marc Rosset of Switzerland today in straight sets.
The reigning French Open champion struggled a little before winning the first set 7-5 and getting into his stride to take the second set 6-1.
Rosset, 1992 Olympic champion, managed a limited comeback in the third set, but could not prevent Moya from winning 7-5 and sealing victory for himself, his team and his country.
Alex Corretja beat George Bastl of switzerland 6-0, 7-5 in the final match of the quarterfinal tie.
