ULFA militants surrender

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
Thakurbari (Assam), July 24: Altogether 51 Ulfa militants, including six hard-core ones, today surrendered with huge quantities of arms and ammunition to Assam Governor lt gen (retd) S K Sinha here, 24 km from Tezpur.

Ulfa's self-styled lieutenant Ripu Kalita said at the oath-taking ceremony, organised by the brigade headquarter of the army 5th mountain division, that the ultras had decided to return to the national mainstream after realising the futility of violence.

Kalita appealed to Ulfa militants to agree for negotiations with the government and solve the insurgency problem peacefully. Addressing the gathering, the Governor hoped that other Ulfa leaders would realise their mistakes and shun violence.
