NWZ, RAF Sectors in semis

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, July 24: North West Zone and Rapid Action Force moved into the semifinals of the eighth Inter-Sector Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) volleyball tournament at the 121 Battalion ground, Hallomajra today. NWZ outclassed Western Sector 15-7, 15-6, 15-3 while RAF scored a convincing 15-4, 15-9, 15-7 victory over Special Sector.

Defending champions NWZ did not have to sweat to score the win over their opponents who were lacking in height. NWZ's Ashok Kumar and Mahinder Singh, with their blocks and smashes, helped the team to gain initial lead and ultimately the contest. The duo of Y Singh and TM Manoj, who guarded the back court were also instrumental in the team's victory.

Sher Singh and Arvind Kumar played well for the losers.

Last year's runners-up RAF proved far too good for Special Sector who failed to put up a brave front in the match today. RAF made their intentions clear from the very beginning and dashed the rivals hopes of entering the semis by winning the first set in just 13 minutes. However, they faced some resistance in the second set (15-9). Gulab Singh and Dharamvir, with their drop shots and good defence, took the third set (15-7) in 10 minutes.

KD Negi and Suresh Kumar got most of the points for the losers.

In another match, North East Sector had to rely on their reserves to post a 11-15, 15-1, 11-15, 15-2, 15-10 victory over Eastern Sector. Southern Sector also made it to the semis at the expense of Nagaland/Manipur Sector whom they defeated in straight sets 15-12, 15-9, 15-8.
