Deportations put on hold
The furore in West Bengal over deportation of alleged Bangladeshis, in defence of whom Chief Minister Jyoti Basu has gone on record to claim were actually Bengali-speaking Indian citizens, had the State administration strongly defending the process under which the deportations were made.

Cauvery monitoring body opposed
Karnataka has declared that it was specifically opposed to the setting up of a statutory, regulatory authority to monitor the implementation of the Cauvery Disputes Tribunal interim award directing the state to release 205 TMC ft of water to Tamil Nadu. Announcing this, Law Minister M C Nanaiah said that the state would stick by its stand that a coordination committee be formed.

BARC among 63 blacklisted institutions
Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (Trombay) and all laboratories and facilities associated with it, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (Kalpakkam) and Electronic Corporation of India are among 63 establishments put under US sanctions and listed by the Department of Energy with the view to deny any aid to India for nuclear missiles or other military programmes.

Ford, Lintas, Daewoo get FIPB clearance
The Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) cleared proposals of advertising firm Lintas Inc, USA, to increase control in its Indian subsidiary and Ford Motor Company's move to set up a software company. The proposal of Daewoo Power to allow ABB Energy Venture as a 50% joint venture partner also got the go-ahead among 30 proposals, worth a total foreign direct investment of Rs 210 crore.
