`Wadekar, the right man to head selection panel'

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NAGPUR, July 26: Former India cricketer and selector, M L Jaisimha suggested that Ajit Wadekar should be made chairman of the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) National selection committee.

``As far as Indian selection committee is concerned there is no man except Wadekar, who has gained vast experience of all aspects of the game,'' the stylish batsman said, adding the present five-man committee should be reduced to a three-man body so that the problems related to `zonal quota' could be dealt with.

He, however, rejected the suggestion of having only Test cricketers as selectors and said a selector should possess a sound cricketing wisdom. In case of Wadekar, he said former the Indian captain's ability as a coach, manager and administrator was of much higher quality as compared to his other counterparts in the panel.

The Hyderabad cricketer, who was here to attend the Bankers' Sports Council's annual prize distribution, expressed his views while addressing newsmen.

Supporting the idea of athree-man committee Jaisimha said, ``the zonal representatives tend to select men from their region only and that sometimes denies a good player a chance to play for his country. Indian cricket revolves around zonal system. It's a sad fact,'' he stated.

The Hyderabad coach raised an objection to the strange selection policy also. ``They select the 35-plus Kanwaljit Singh in the India squad and induct 16-year-old Harbhajan in seniors' team. In fact, the `A' team should provide good cricketers to the senior squad. Yahan to Ganga ulti bahati hai,'' he remarked.

He said those who have represented India do not get a place in India `A'. That is enough to prove politics in `quota-based' selection procedure. He also termed an idea of picking 60 probables for various National squads as `absurd'.

While talking about the greatest showmen of the game, Jaisimha said there is no match to his `darling' Sachin Tendulkar. ``He just kills a bowler. Whenever I happen to meet this wonder, I salute him.''
