CHANDIGARH, July 26: The Chandigarh Administration is considering the development of a new golf course either in the southern sectors or in the periphery of the City.Officials say there is an increasing demand for another golf course in Chandigarh. The number of members in the existing golf course is very large now and there is a long waiting list of those wanting to become members. It is being considered that developing a golf course in the periphery will maintain the "green use" of the area. The golf course is likely to have a club attached to it which will offer some recreational facilities. The Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) is also planning a golf course in Panchkula.
In addition, another club on the pattern of Chandigarh Club is being considered for the southern sectors. There is a feeling among residents of the City that the southern sectors do not have adequate recreational facilities. In this regard, officials say a club may be set up in the area, offering facilities for sports, recreation and catering.
Another idea under consideration is an institute for officials of civil services. Officials say that one such institute is coming up in Delhi and will provide space for seminars, conferences, a library and recreational facilities too.
Officials point out that the membership of clubs in the City is reaching a saturation point. "Also, civil servants are finding it increasingly difficult to be members of such clubs."
Officials, however, stress that these proposals are at preliminary stages. No area has been identified as yet and the feasibility is being studied. The Department of Architecture is also considering the matter and the possible locations where these can be developed.
