A scholarship from GMAAA came as a icing on the cake. That's Bhavana Sharma, an eighth standard student of Swami Vivekananda School, BPCL, who has has caught the eye of the swimming fraternity.``She has proved herself at the junior level in this championships by setting five new meet records. But we want to see is how she she fares at the senior level,'' said her coach Anup Radhakrishnani, who is impressed with her ability to grasp instruction and implement them.
The only daughter of Subhash Kumar and Rajni Sharma, Bhavana took to swimming five years back to keep herself fit.
It was Radhakrishnani who discovered the swimming potential in Bhavana, who took up the sport with her parents giving herfull support and encouragement from two of her best friends, Gayatri and Tejaswini.
``She is very hardworking and punctual,'' said Radhakrishnani about her 13-year old trainee.
Bhavana is a regular member of Maharashtra's swimming team to National's since last three years. At the last National's held at Pune, she won a gold, two silver and a bronze medal in individual events and team events.
The 50 metres backstroke is her favourite event in which she has not lost in the last couple of seasons. ``But I am comfortable with other events too. I think, I have done enough in the past to prove myself,'' said Bhavana.
``She has participated in the Nationals for the past four years and has improved tremendously with every passing year,'' opined Radhakrishnani, who is aiming to see Bhavana participate in the 2002 Asian Games.
``People should remember me for my records at the National level,'' says Bhavana, whose sweats it out for two-and-half-hour every evening in the pool.
Being born and bought up inMumbai, she prefers to be called as more of Mumbaikar. ``I prefer to have Indian food as it is easy to digest before competition,'' says Bhavana, who is equally proficient in her academics.
The young swimmer believes the two best athletes on the planet are Germany's tennis-star Steffi Graf and Chicago Bull's Michael Jordan. But in swimming she considers gold medalist Olympian Benette Brooke of United States of America.
