CHENNAI, July 28: Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has convened a meeting of chief ministers of Southern States and Pondicherry in New Delhi on Aug 6 to resolve the Cauvery issue, Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi said in Chennai on Tuesday.The PM had sent a letter inviting him to participate in the meeting, Karunanidhi said in an official press release. The CM said he had convened an all-party meeting in Chennai on Aug 3 to decide the stand to be adopted by the Tamil Nadu Government at the talks.
Karunanidhi said the Prime Minister in his letter had stated that he had called for the meeting in accordance with the Supreme Court's advice to hold discussions with the concerned chief ministers regarding implementation of the Cauvery Waters Dispute Tribunal's interim award and to try and reduce differences and find a solution to the longstanding dispute on sharing of Cauvery waters. The PM had also sought the CM's co-operation in this regard, the release said.
Karunanidhi said the chiefsecretaries of the four southern States and Pondicherry had been called to New Delhi by the Centre to discuss the issue on Wednesday.
