NEW DELHI, July 28: The election for the post of Lok Sabha deputy speaker would be held on August four clearing clouds of uncertainty over holding of the exercise in the current session of the House. Announcing the election schedule, Lok Sabha secretary general S Gopalan said nominations would be received upto 1200 hours of August three.The BJP-led coalition has put up Rita Verma, a third term MP from Bihar, against the joint opposition nominee P M Sayeed, a veteran parliamentarian, who represents Lakshadweep for the ninth consecutive term in Lok Sabha.
The notification for the election by Speaker G M C Balayogi followed the Union Cabinet's decision to extend the Lok Sabha session till August 5 to enable "transaction of some important official business and other items", in the face of stiff resistance from the opposition.
Home Minister L K Advani met the Speaker today and sought extension to enable transaction of official business, including tabling of and discussion on the Jain Panel report, the ATRand the discussion on foreign policy.
