SURAT, July 28: In a major crackdown on bootleggers operating in the region, the prohibition police, in four raids conducted simultaneously, seized alcohol and goods worth Rs 9 lakhs and initiated legal proceedings against seven people.In the first raid conducted one km off the Chikli Char Rasta, the prohibition police led by DCP Solanki intercepted a truck (GTJ 6717), one kilometre off the national highway no 8, and seized 6540 bottles of Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) valued at Rs 3.30 lakh. The truck, valued at Rs 4 lakh, was confiscated by the police and a case registered at the Navsari prohibition police station. Three people Ramanbhai Mahar, the truck driver, a resident of Dhgarampur in Valsad, Shukarbhai Tandel, a resident of Machhiwad, Daman and Daulat Patel of Gandevi were also arrested in the raid conducted after midnight.
In a second raid conducted on Monday night, the Mangrol prohibition police raided one Ranjanben Jeevanbhai's house in Bharthana village of Kamrej taluka and seized 124 bottles of different brands of foreign liquor, valued at Rs 18,000. Ranjanben was taken into custody and a case registered at the station.
Bootleggers Ramkishore Yadav of Surat, Bhagwan Maratha of Kubhari village in Surat and Raju Madrasi of Kosmada village, were arrested in the early hours of Tuesday during a raid carried out at a liquor den at Kosmada village in Kamrej taluka. A total of 450 litres of country liquor, in 13 cans as well as 4000 litres of wash used to distill country liquor were also seized by the police. Incidentally, Madrasi had been declared absconding and was wanted by the police. Goods worth Rs 25,000 was also seized in the raid, conducted after midnight, the police said.
In the fourth raid, conducted by the DCP along with the intelligence wing at Bagumara village in Bardoli, 1724 bottles of IMFL worth Rs 1.04 lakhs were seized. One Suresh Patel, also an absconder, was arrested in the raid, the police stated.
Besides DCP Solanki, prohibition PSI V B Mali and other constables conducted the raids. The DCP told Express Newsline that the raids were conducted as part of a joint operation under the instructions of Prohibition Commissioner B S Gadhvi.
