NASHIK, Aug 5: The fate of Gokhale Education Society's HPT college students who appeared for the Bachelor of Communication and Journalism (BCJ) degree course examination conducted by Pune University, hangs fire. The university had conducted the BCJ exams in April 1998 for theory papers, while the college had conducted an internal assessment for practical and term work. Before declaration of results on July 16, a committee was sent by university to the college. On July 9, the committee visited the college. When results were declared, the college and students found that internal assessment marks (granted by the college) had been drastically reduced. Consequently, only one out of the 14 students passed.
While the students have sent memorandum to Chancellor Dr PC Alexander, and varsity officials, the college, too, has written a letter Vice-Chancellor, Dr Vasant Gowarikar, registering its protest.
In the letter, Principal Bhaskar Giridhari has questioned propriety and legality of the two-member committee(comprising head of the department of journalism, Arun Sadhu and Prof PN Paranjape) visiting the college on July 9. He has also questioned the propriety of keeping the college in the dark over changes in the internal assessment marks. He has pointed out that the internal marks had totally been ignored by the university and has questioned whether such revaluation was proper and had a precedent.
Giridhari told The Indian Express that the letter had been sent in an unprecedented move, the university had totally set aside the assessment by the college. He said that the vice-chancellor had been asked to look into the matter and take necessary action.
Meanwhile, the students have accused the university of being prejudiced. They claimed that the gesture of the university indicated that it wanted to promote Pune students and suppress Nashik students.
The college has been conducting the BCG course for the past 15 years and this incident is said to be unprecedented.
