Gujarat cadets tame Delhi

NEW DELHI, August 5: Reigning champions Punjab stormed into the girls final of the volleyball competition in the second NCC Games at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium here on Wednesday when they downed Kerala 15-11, 15-7, 15-6. Punjab will take on Andhra Pradesh in the final. In the other semifinal, AP defeated Madhya Pradesh 15-5, 15-2, 15-3.

Punjab's task against Kerala was made esy with superb offensive by skipper Jeewan Lata who had the support of an agile and athletic Sukhijinder Kaur. AP owed their superb win over mp to their fine all-round performance. MP girls could not withstand the onslaught of P Radhika's smashes. Radhika also controlled and dominated the match by playing the pivotal role.

In football, Delhi went down without a fight to Gujarat while Bengal romped home 6-1 winners over Rajasthan. Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh played a close encounter with the former emerging winners with a 5-4 verdict. Karnataka defeated Jammu and Kashmir 3-1, Kerala beat Uttar Pradesh 3-2 and Madhya Pradesh triumphed 2-1 over Bihar in the other matches.

Football (positional matches): bengal bt Rajsthan 6-1, Karnataka bt Jammu and Kashmir 3-1, Gujarat bt Delhi 5-0, Tamil Nadu bt Andhra Pradesh 5-4, Kerala bt Uttar Pradesh 3-2, Madhya Pradesh bt Bihar 2-1.

Volleyball (girls): Semifinals: Punjab bt Kerala 15-11, 15-7, 15-6; Andhra Pradesh bt Madhya Pradesh 15-5, 15-2, 15-3.

Positional matches: Tamil Nadu bt Rajsthan 15-2, 15-3; Orissa bt North easter Region 15-0, 15-0; Delhi bt Uttar Pradesh 15-0, 15-2; Bengal bt Jammu and Kashmir 15-0, 15-1; Maharashtra bt Gujarat 15-1, 15-3; Karnataka bt Bihar 15-2, 15-0.
