Terwadkar, Malti steal show in first round

MUMBAI, August 6: Parag Terwadkar and Malti Vhatwar were the cynosure of the first round of the Entrants Division play off chess tournament here on Wednesday. Parag, an eighth standard student of Navi Mumbai School, surprised top seed Vakil Akhtar while Malti, of Chetana College, defeated Pramod Kumar P.

Parag handled the white wide of the Queen's Gambit against Akhtar. Both players castled on the King-side. Akhtar offered his g pawn to develop an attack but Parag refused the offer and created a passer on b file with one extra pawn. Akhtar captured a pawn on e5 square which turned out to be a blunder.

Parag immediately pinned Akhtar's King on h8 by pushing his bishop to d4. Akhtar had to give up his queen for a bishop and thereafter he resigned.

Malti faced Pramod Kumar's Centre Counter, castled on the opposite side and gained an initiative.

By the end she had won a whole rook and when she started an attack on the black King with her queen and rook, Pramod sensed the danger and resigned on the 41stmove.

Bad Boys beaten

Brihan Mumbai Mahagnagar Palikha Kridha Bhavan (BMMPKB) beat Bad Boys Club 2-0 (half-time 0-0) in an MDFA league Div I-A football match at the St Xavier's Gound, Parel, today.

Bad Boys Club wasted a penalty taken by Zenon D'Souza, BMMPKB's goalkeeper Sameer Jadhav bringing off a good save.

Suresh Arya put BMMPKB ahead in the 37th minute before Suresh Arya shot home powerfully to extend the lead 20 minutes later. Wonder Boys (Sahar) beat Vidya Vikas 2-1 in Div II-B. Anand Kadam and Hemant Kadam scored for the winners with Alwyn Mathias pulling one back for Vidya Vikas.

Jyoti Dadar Boys held Khalsa Gymkhana 1-1 in Div III-B. Ferdinand Fernandes scored for Khalsa while Praful Waghela levelled scores.

Anupam rallies

Fourth seed Anupam Singh fought back to defeat sub-junior champion Sumedh Deorukhkar in the quarter-finals of the Thane District badminton tournament today.

Anupam won 15-11, 14-17, 15-9 at the Navi Mumbai Sports Association Indoor Stadium to jointop seed Bhushan Paithankar, second seed Himanshu Thakkar and Suraj Thakur in the semi-finals.

CBI allowed to play

The Western India Football Association have after a meeting held on Wednesday decided that Central Bank will be allowed to play in the Super Division league till a final decision is taken by the Disciplinary Sub-Committee which is expected to meet soon. The re-match of the Central Bank-Income-Tax clash will be held on August 8.

Badminton tourney
