Mixed luck for UP sub-junior teams

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, August 6: Punjab, last year's runners-up, began their campaign in the second edition of the Independence Gold Cup sub-junior hockey tournament in style, beating Uttar Pradesh B 4-1 in a group B match while Uttar Pradesh A team thrashed Rajasthana B 11-1 on the opening day at the National Stadium here today.

The tournament, organised jointly by Sports Authority of India and Delhi Hockey Association, is part of SAI's hockey promotion scheme and it was a success in its inaugural edition.

The match between Punjab and UP `B' team failed to rouse much interest as the latter was too weak a team for the former. Similarly, UP `A' squad found the Rajasthan `B' team an easy meat as they kept on firing from all cylindrs.

Though the first half proved to be rather slow, the Punjab boys came into their groove only after change of ends. UP's defence lapses in this session also aided Punjab in their cause. Punjab had to wait for 22 minutes to open their account when Jatinder Singh sounded the board off a cross from centre. But UP `B' boys restored parity when Prem Kumar struck from close in the 35th minute.

On resumption, however, Punjab swarmed the rival defence and Gurbaj Singh accounted for the team's second and third goal in a span of six minutes -- his first was off a penalty corner. Balbir Singh completed the tally with a crisp shot two minutes from time.

Uttar Pradesh `A' scored at will against Rajasthan `B'. Mohammad Sahid was the star of UP's vicotry as he banged in four of the 11 goals by his side.

UP began the onslaught as early as in the second minute of the game when Aamir Khan found the target with a powerful shot. Rizwan Khan increased the tally within seven minutes and after this goal they went into their shell for a whilee. Amit Tyagi started the goal-glut in the 27th minute which continued till the end of the game.

After him, Vivek and Sahid scored in quick succession before Rajasthan managed their only goal in the 42nd minute through Ankit Panchal. But there was no let in UP's scoring as Iram Khan struck in the 49th minut. Thereafter it was left to Sahid, Vikas Choudhary and Rizwan to complete the tally.
