Cong youth rally signals war against Sena-BJP

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, Aug 17: In a renewed attack on the besieged fortress of the Sena-BJP today, the Congress demanded the arrest of Sena chief Bal Thackeray and declared a virtual war against the saffron combine in the State.

Indian Youth Congress president Manish Tewari as well as senior leaders Murli Deora, Chhagan Bhujbal, Kripa Shankar Singh and Rajiv Chavan called for immediate action against the Sena chief and the dismissal of the government in Maharashtra.

Tewari who led a massive protest by the Maharashtra Pradesh Youth Congress against the government's rejection of the Srikrishna Commission's report on the 1992-93 Mumbai riots, warned the Sena-BJP that their continued subversion of the Constitution of India and the law of the land would meet stiff resistance from youth Congress activists.

``It is unfortunate that the government has ambushed the report and attempted to give it a communal colour.

``It is imperative that its recommendations, especially those pertaining to action against the people who heldguilty of instigating the riots, be implemented forthwith,'' he said warning that the Youth Congress was prepared to descend on to the streets all over the country to stall the working of the government if it continues to subvert the laws of the country. As if in indication to the former threat MPYC activists burnt effigies of Thackeray and copies of the government's Action Taken Report.

Around 20,000 Youth Congress workers had managed to reach the Azad Maidan by the time the protests began in the afternoon. According to MPYC president Anees Ahmed several were still streaming in by the time the demonstrations closed, delayed by problems on the railway lines.

An attempt by the boys to break the barricades and hold a spontaneous rasta roko were, however, foiled by the police who shut the Azad Maidan gates and kept most of them within the confines of the vast grounds, revealed Maharashtra Youth Congress chief Charan Singh Sapra. However, a small delegation, led by Tewari, was allowed out to proceed to RajBahvan where they presented a memorandum to Governor P C Alexander.

Coming after an initial thaw in the clamour against against Thackeray, Brihanmumbai Regional Congress Committee president Murli Deora, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary Kripa Shankar Singh, Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council Chhagan Bhujbal and All India Congress Committee member Rajiv Chavan, all of whom addressed the rally, warned the Sena-BJP to desist from communalising the issue.

Ramrao Adik, chairperson of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee's Srikrishna Report study committee, today said that it was most unfortunate that the government instead of ``acting solemnly'' on the report ``in a non-partisan and non-communal manner has politicised the issue by criticising in an irresponsible manner the High Court judge who conducted the inquiry and attempted to inflame communal passions''.

Workshop on jobs

  • Departing from the norm of pitting its brawn against that ofthe Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party government in Maharashtra, the Brihanmumbai Pradesh Youth Congress has now set itself a constructive task: to seek opportunities for sustained self-employment for the youth.

Accordingly, BPYC president Charan Singh Sapra has roped in a galaxy of brains to prepare a blueprint for 2000 and Beyond for the Youth of India, beginning Tuesday. The workshop on the empowerment of youth will be inaugurated by former Lok Sabha Speaker P A Sangma. Among the workshop directors are eminent business and management experts S P Godrej, M Raghuram (Mahindra and Mahindra), Y P Trivedi, president of the Indian Merchants' Chamber, Mahadev Chavan, advisor to the Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India and others.

Party stalwarts who are expected to point the noses of their youth in the right direction are Mani Shankar Aiyar, Jairam Ramesh and Major Sudhir Sawant, all currently secretaries of the AICC.
