The ruling BJP-led coalition has plunged into its severest crisis yet with the BJP and the AIADMK openly squabbling over J Jayalalitha's allegation of corruption in the PMO and Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee dictating a letter to Jayalalitha asking her to substantiate her charge that ``hefty bribes'' were paid to someone close to him to get Enforcement chief M K Bezbaruah out.

The seven-year row over the implementation of the Cauvery river interim award which took the BJP-led government to the brink recently was set to rest by today when the Supreme Court put its seal of approval on the scheme framed and notified by the Centre in this regard.
Rouble trouble for Yeltsin
Russia today devalued the rouble for all practical purposes, risking political and social crisis which might shake the government in coming weeks. Making unexpected fiscal policy changes, the government, in a joint agreement with the central bank, announced a new floating exchange rate for the rouble, fixing a corridor from 6 to 9.5 to the dollar.
