August 18: Mulund College of Commerce, St Gonsalo, A Vartak and Chandibai (Ulhasnagar) have qualified for the play-off event from Group B in the Inter-Collegiate chess tournament conducted by the Bombay Chess Association at the University Sports Pavilion today.MCC, hot favourite for rolling trophy, defeated Chandibai by 3-1 and St Gonsalo defeated Chetna by 2.5-1.5 Vartak (Vasai) advanced with a crushing 4-0 victory over B Vartak (Borivli).
R Kashelkar on the second board and Ashish Thatte on the third board, both from MCC, have won all their seven games.
Group B top board results: MCC (25) bt CHM (19) 3-1; Chetana (18) lost to St Gonsolo (19) 1.5-2.5; B Vartak (15) lost to A Vartak (19) 0-4; Vaze (16.5) drew with MMK (16.5) 2-2; Royal (15) lost to Sanghvi (16) 1.5-2.5.
Cadets success
Maharastra Directorate won seven gold, 13 silver and 10 bronze in the All India National Cadet Corps (NCC) Games 1998 held at New Delhi on August 1 to August 15.
The directorate also won a silver medal inPatriotic Pageant at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi. Maharshtra State finished second among 16 sides, bettering last year's fourth.
Inter-College soccer
The Inter-Collegiate football tournament will commence on September 2 onwards at the University and St Xavier's Ground.
Fixtures and draw will be ready on Aug 24 and will be available at the University Sports Pavilion, Marine Lines.
Schools judo
The Mumbai School Sports Association Inter-Schools judo competition for boys and girls sponsored by Colgate Palmolive (India) Ltd will be held on August 29 at the University Sports Pavilion, Marine Lines.
