Day after friend's suicide, girl jumps off same spot

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, August 18: A 15-year-old girl jumped to her death from the same spot that a 19-year-old youth, Harpreet, whom she was reportedly seeing, had chosen to commit suicide yesterday. Gauravi Gautam jumped from the eighth floor of the Anupam Apartments in East Arjun Nagar around 2.20 pm today.

Gauravi, a student of class X in DAV school, Ghaziabad, was found lying dead by the residents of the building who informed the police. Residents told Express Newsline, ``We heard a loud thud. When we rushed down we saw Gauravi lying on the ground. However, there wasn't much bleeding. There must have been internal bleeding.''

According to a neighbour, ``Harpreet, who committed suicide yesterday, was apparently seeing her. When Gauravi's mother learnt of his death, she sent Gauravi away to her grandmother's house in Jhilmil Colony.''

Gauravi reportedly learnt of Hapreet's death this morning from her classmates in school. Some neighbours claim they had seen Gauravi get down from her school bus in the afternoon. Not long thereafter, they saw her body lying on the ground.

A resident of the apartment said, ``We called two doctors living in the apartment to check on Gauravi. One of them refused to touch her saying that he would not examine her before the police arrived at the spot. However, the other doctor examined her pulse and confirmed that she was no more.''

Anand Vihar police reportedly found her school bag from the terrace of the apartment. Police said that investigations were on to ascertain the circumstances that led to her death.

The dead girl is a resident of Anupam apartments. Though Anand Vihar police are silent about the circumstances that might have led her to commit suicide, neighbours believe that she might have been driven to desperation by her friend Harpreet's death yesterday.

Harpreet jumped to his death from the terrace of the seven-storeyed Anupam Apartments in East Arjun Nagar around 11 a.m. on Monday. His father, Bhajan Singh Madan, died of a heart attack six months ago and the police believe that the youth was depressed due to this. He had passed out of school last year and was reportedly hoping to get his father's job at a bank. However, his friends claimed that he was upset over a fight that he had with his younger brother.
