BJP ready for life after Jaya, Mahajan threatens to sue
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and allies toughened their stance against the AIADMK today, giving enough indications that the front is gearing up for life after J Jayalalitha. While Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee for the first time reacted to her allegation that `people close' to him accepted bribes from the owners of a newspaper group to transfer the Enforcement Director, Pramod Mahajan threatened to sue Jayalalitha for the statements pointing to him in the AIADMK's note.
US lays Laden low, bombs his bases
Virtually declaring a war on international terrorism, the United States last night carried out simultaneous military strikes against terrorist camps in Afghanistan and a pharmaceutical unit in Sudan thought to be readying chemical weapons for terrorists. US officials said the attacks came at 10 p.m local time in Afghanistan and 7.30 p.m local time in Sudan, in order to minimise any possible civilian casualties.
JD seeks Rabri Govt's ouster
The Janata Dal has appealed to President K R Narayanan to dismiss the Rabri Devi government in Bihar for its failure on all fronts, especially the breakdown of law and order. The party has also demanded a judicial inquiry to investigate the "unprovoked" police firing in Sitamarhi which took a toll of five lives, including that of veteran JD leader Ramacharitra Rai.
