SINGAPORE, AUG 21: It's a beauty pageant with an information technology twist.Twelve contestants for Miss Internet Singapore will parade in business suits and answer Internet trivia questions by typing on laptops in the pageant finals tomorrow night.
``A big portion of the votes - 30 per cent - comes from the public,'' said Alex Liu of Metro-media, the event organizer.
From August 1-21, anyone able to log onto the Miss Internet Singapore web site has had the chance to view pictures of the finalists, listen to their voices, read about their hopes on their home pages, and vote for them by sending an E-mail or Voice mail.
Judges chose the 12 finalists, aged 15 to 26, after interviewing some of the 620 applicants, who signed up online.
Internet knowledge counts for 60 per cent of the final points tally, but the contestants are also judged on how they look in evening wear and in workout clothes, leotards, shorts and sleeveless t-shirts.
``The great thing about this pageant is that it does not test us strictly on our Internet skills, it's about beauty as well,'' contestant Stella Tan, 23, a molecular biology student, told a local newspaper.
The subsidiary of a Singapore company sponsored the first Miss Internet world contest in Trier, Germany last month, said Liu. It was won by a Singaporean fitness instructor and model, Genevieve Nathan Edwards, 22, who beat contestants from 14 other countries.
Singaporeans already date through the Internet, and use it for everything from paying taxes to ordering taxis.
