Mayor's demand
Delhi Mayor Yog Dhyan Ahuja on Friday demanded that the Delhi Government set up an engineering college in the trans-Yamuna area so that students in that area could receive technical education.

At present, the Mayor said, 35 acres of vacant land was also available at Shahdara for this purpose. Moreover, he has also written a letter to Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma highlighting his demand.

JNUSU strike enters second day
The agitation led by the JNUSU for the provision of temporary accomodation for new out station students and reconstitution of the Gender Sensitisation and anti sexual harassment committee has entered the second day. JNUSU president Battilal Bairwa was on hunger strike on August 20 and 21.

IP College celebrates platinum jubilee
The Indraprastha College for women will be celebrating it's platinum jubilee in 1998-99. The alumni are requested to send their current address along with the date of birth and years spent in college to enable an update of the alumni data base. The college proposes to honour on the College Day this year, it's first entrants in 1924, the first batch of intermediate students who passed out in 1926, first graduates in 1933. Details should be sent to the principal.

Jag Parvesh's demand
The leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Jag Pravesh Chandra has written to Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma demanding that he implement the resolution passed unanimously by the Delhi Assembly in April this year deciding that the next assembly election would be held on the basis of the voters' identity cards.

In view of Verma's solemn assurance to the House on using photo identity cards in the next election, Chandra said it was imperative that the Chief Minister keep his promise. This would avoid impersonation and bogus voting.

Cataract free Delhi campaign
With a view to identify the cataract cases and refer them for surgery to the hospitals, the Delhi Government will launch the fourth phase of the Cataract Free Delhi campaign on September 1 and 2 in Delhi. Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan said under the campaign, screening would be carried out through a network of about 500 fixed hospitals and dispensaries all over Delhi.

Standing Finance committee meet
In a meeting of Standing Finance Committee, under the Chairmanship of Professor Jagdish Mukhi, a sum of Rs 24,09,39,928 was sanctioned for the construction of a new jail in Rohini. The private secretaries of finance, planning, home, medical and others attended the meeting. After the meeting Professor Mukhi said there will be a special provision to lock up female criminals and juveniles in the new jail and basic requirements for prisoners will be provided in the jail.

Supply to be affected
Due to maintenance work the continuity of electric supply will be affected from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday in Hotel Oberoi Maidens, Sham Nath Marg, PNB, Bella Road, Raj Narain Marg, Vijay Ghat, Shanti Van and some areas of Central Delhi.
