Washington swoops down
The temptation could be strong to assail America's attacks on terrorist camps in Afghanistan and Sudan as more evidence of American hubris and unilateralism. It should be resisted. America's action is a response to a genuine security threat to its nationals all over the world from international terrorist groups.

Bezbaruah's friends protest too much
While few would question either the integrity or the ability of former Enforcement Directorate (ED) chief M.K. Bezbaruah, the media campaign orchestrated by the Friends of Bez (FOB) is beginning to wear a bit thin, apart from being factually incorrect as well as inconsistent. The nub of the problem, as defined by the FOB, is that all important cases being investigated by the ED, such as the Ashok Jain and the Jayalalitha ones, will fall apart once he goes. Indeed, according to them, that is precisely why the BJP showed such indecent haste in transferring him out they wanted to protect the media baron as well as their alliance partner, and so wanted the uncooperative Bezbaruah out.But is that really so? If you go by the statements of the AIADMK chief J. Jayalalitha, it wouldn't appear that this logic applies to the FERA-violation cases against her close aide Sasikala or her relatives.

Uttaranchal's latest pawn
Usually a staid pilgrim town, Hardwar buzzes with activity only during the Kumbh Mela. The fair is over in May and the town goes to sleep right thereafter, to stir only in the next spring.
