MUMBAI, August 23: The controversy over 16-year-old Indu Anto's death simply refuses to rest in peace. The Gamdevi police say the Sophia College hostelite was not ragged to death but was tormented by self-debasing thoughts which pushed her to suicide a fortnight ago.Police are also taking Jaslok Hospital to task for failing to intimate them after the girl was admitted to the institution, which was incumbent on them as the death is a medico-legal case. They have written to the private hospital seeking an explanation.
Senior Inspector of the Gamdevi police station, D C Wilson, told Express Newsline that police were informed of the incident only by the college authorities, twice between 9.45 am and 10.15 am. Indu was admitted to Jaslok Hospital at Peddar Road, at 6.30 am. She expired at 8.55 am as per the police record.
Following a letter (dated August 8) written by Indu's local guardian A G Johnson to Governor Dr P C Alexander, a copy of which was officially routed to Wilson, police have also sought theopinion from doctors of a government hospital to ascertain the line of treatment in such a case.
Johnson has alleged in his letter: ``The first thing to be done for a head injury is a CT scan and for a fall from a height, an entire body scan. No such thing was done until the neurosurgeon reported for duty at around 7.15 am or 7.30 am.''
Medical Director of Jaslok Hospital, Dr M P Lekhi, told Express Newsline, ``The attending doctor did his best to save the child.'' He confirmed that the hospital had received the letter from the police asking it to explain its alleged lapses. However, he refused to comment on the ``veracity of the allegation at this juncture''.
As for the three-hour delay by the college authorities in intimating the police, Wilson says, ``They were understandably caught up in the tragedy of the situation''.
Burying the ragging theory, police have concluded that Indu committed suicide. They have based their observation on the girl's personal diary, circumstantial evidence and thetestimony of her fellow-hostelites. ``There could have been some light teasing but nothing to prompt her suicide. Media reports quoting anonymous Sophia College students say the teenager committed suicide following severe ragging. But during our inquiries with the hostelites, no one said so.''
Also, the girl's slippers were arranged neatly and were not found in separate places as reported in the media. ``She was not pushed by anyone or ragged enough to prompt suicide,'' he observes.
Police have also scrutinised two personal diaries which Indu maintained since the last two years. They say the journals clearly indicate that the girl was very depressed at failing to live up to her parents' expectations. ``We have sent these diaries to the psychiatry department of a government hospital for expert views,'' Wilson says.
``Her room-mates have told us that Indu, at times, would not go to the bathroom for three days at a stretch. Sometimes, she would abstain from eating for two days. She would also accuse herroom-mates of laughing at her though also admitting that she may have imagined it after they protested,'' Wilson reveals.
One niggling detail the post-mortem has dug up are two injuries above Indu's knees which the report suggests were sustained before her death. ``These injuries, one above the left patella and another on the border of the left patella, were sustained three to five days before her death, according to the report. We shall question the college authorities about the source of these injuries,'' he says.
Gamdevi police, who have still to tie up a couple of loose ends, are yet to submit a final report on the case. However, Indu's allegations of ragging, which she confided to her parents, continue to stalk the case.
