A family affair for Promila, Sharmila

NEW DELHI, August 23: Promila and Sharmila made the Rajiv Gandhi Run, conducted by the national Sports Club of India (NSCI) for slum children here on Sunday morning, a family affir. The sisters clinched the first two spots in the sixth edition of run which began at the Ferozeshah Kotla grounds and culminated at the NSCI.Promila had won the event last year as well. The two sisters, who plan to take long-distance running seriously, are students of NDMC Tilak Marg Primary School. Over 30,000 schoolchildren from the slums participated in the Run which was flagged off by the Lt Governor, Vijai Kapoor. Former Test cricketer Maninder Singh was among those present at the flag-off. NSCI president Subhash Chopra said 400 best runners will be given cash prizes after ascrtaining their eligibility from their respective schools. The first five finishers in each group will receive Rs 1,000 and the next 10 will get Rs 500. The first 25 children in each group will get scholarship of Rs 100 per month till the time they complete their higher secondary education, Chopra said.
